Implus is a fitness accessories portfolio company owned by Berkshire Partners, with 16 brands operating across a global footprint. When Polk arrived, the COVID-19 pandemic had already begun reshaping how consumers shopped, how retailers operated, and how supply chains functioned. His task was to transform the company’s operating model while navigating those disruptions simultaneously.
Michael Polk led Implus through that period by leaning into the structural advantages of private company management. Without the quarterly reporting obligations of a public company, he could focus on durable improvements rather than short-term metrics. He restructured processes, strengthened the company’s financial performance, and positioned Implus for what he describes as sustainable growth.
What the Experience Revealed

With fewer resources and flatter structures, Implus employees were challenged to take on broader responsibilities and engage with more facets of the business than they might have in a larger corporate setting.
“As a corollary, senior leaders are drawn deeper into the business as player-coaches and have to help their people in those moments of choice and also manage risk,” Polk explains.
